Catholic Blog Title Ideas from Catholic Literature and Other
Writings: Effective Blog Title Ideas Series (2 of 7)
Introduction
In searching for ideas and sources of inspiration for an effective
blog title will obtain us a harvest from Catholic articles, books,
poems and classic spiritual writings. This article suggests a few
to help us discover our own Catholic blog title.
Article titles from Catholic periodicals
With a subscription to Catholic periodicals published regularly, you can
discover patterns for titling your own blog. For example, "Being, Giving"
by Rica Bolipata-Santos is just a two-word title, but speaks much to us about
the essence of being Catholic. Just two simple words combined like that
can already be effective in communicating a Christian message in a Catholic
blog.
Another idea is "Prayer and Life" - the name of a section in the Catholic
periodical Review for Religious. This is also basically a two-word
title that combines two important elements of the Christian faith. A simple
title, but richly laden with meaning.
The two title patterns presented above are Christian themes of a general
nature and thus can provide a wide range of subtopics, categories, and tags
for a Catholic blog using your own ideas. Other titles from which we can
also pattern our own Catholic blog title are the following: "Reclaiming
Silence for Holiness" by Daniel J. Heisey, and "Therese and the Mercy of God"
by Carolyn Humphreys. The words in the titles of these articles are simple,
familiar words, but they refer to a specific theme that can help us with
our own blog title. The pattern of how other authors title there work
can give us ideas on how we can pattern our own titles and with our own
ideas. Good ideas breed more good ideas; we only need to be open and
be receptive to inspiration.
Inspiration from Catholic books
A second source of ideas for a blog title are from the many Catholic
books published and recorded in the Library of Congress. One book
title pattern is a combination of three related subjects. A very good
example is "Poets, Prophets, & Pragmatists" by Evelyn Woodward. The three
words in the title all begin with the same letter. This book was an inspiration
for me to create a former blog entitled, "Books, Blogs & BTWs" - a blog promoting
This three three-word title can also be used even if the first letter of the words
are not the same. Many book authors use this title pattern more often. An
example is "Celibacy, Prayer, and Friendship" by Christopher Kiesling.
Given these two examples, we can now formulate our own three-word
blog title idea that combines topics we are familiar and knowledgeable
about.
Phrases from poems as effective blog title ideas
If you are familiar with the breviary, you know the section on
Night Prayers found towards the end of the prayer book. This section
of the breviary has some poems presented and used as alternatives to
the traditional hymns. When you read again these poems, a few of its
poetic phrases can also be used as blog titles. They can be effective
blog titles since they evoke deep and intense movements in the heart.
Examples of these phrases in the poems are "God Alone Suffices" by St.
Teresa of Avila, "Abide With Me" by H.F. Lyte, and "Lead, Kindly Light"
by Blessed John Henry Newman.
Ideas from the classics of Catholic spirituality
The titles from Catholic classic writings also follow a pattern which
we can apply in creating our own Catholic blog title. This title
pattern has the elements of a one-word subject, followed by a prepositional
phrase beginning with "of". Three examples of these are:
"The Ascent of Mount Carmel" by St. John of the Cross, "The Story of a
Soul" by St. Therese of Lisieux, and "The Cloud of Unknowing" by a 13th-14th
century mystic and writer. Titles of this kind evoke mystical imagery and
symbols, which one can use reflections and meditations on the gospel and
the Christian faith in general.
Summary
There are four sources given above to help us find an effective
blog title for our own blog. There are certainly a lot more to be
searched and researched from. But you can narrow your search by
choosing whatever Catholic periodicals, books, poems and the
classics you already have in your personal collection, or anyone
of these that you know by heart. As you create your our own title,
you can also post in a manner and style that is in line or similar
to the spirit and thought of the authors of these Catholic sources,
so as to be in line with the thinking and practice of the Catholic
Church.
