Catholic Blog Title Ideas from Scripture and Tradition: Effective Blog Title Ideas Series (5 of 7)

Introduction

In the past four articles of this series, we examined four sources of inspiration and ideas to title a Catholic blog: from Catholic prayers, Catholic literature, Catholic music, and Catholic key words. This fifth article will examine the Scriptures and the documents of the Church, as sources of inspiration and our own ideas for formulating an effective blog title idea. The focus of this article will be on the New Testament, the Psalms, and the Wisdom books (for Scripture) and then the documents of the Church in general plus the writings of John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

Context as the ground for deeper meaning

In examining the various phrases from Scriptures and the documents of the Church, we can also look at the context in which the meaning of the phrases are rooted in. If we also consider the context of the phrases we have abstracted the inspiration from, we can be guided well and follow a thinking in line with that of the Church. If we find many ideas which we can apply to a blog title, let us also pay attention to them because we can also weave them into the main theme and context of the Catholic blog title in which we have formulated.

Suggestions from Scripture (New Testament)

In reading the Bible, we will encounter many phrases that can positively impress and inspire us. Below are five phrases which you can consider in creating your own Catholic blog title. These five phrases are very popular and many Catholics can relate to them. They are as follows:

  • "Do this in memory of me" (1 Corinthians 11:24)
  • "Blessed are the peacemakers" (Matthew 5:9)
  • "God is with us" (Matthew 1:23)
  • "Ask the Lord of the harvest" (Matthew 9:38)
  • "Treasure hidden in a field" (Matthew 13:44)

These five phrases can suggest how you can develop well a Catholic blog. "Do this in memory of me" can be a title for a blog on the Eucharist. "Blessed are the peacemakers" can be a title for a blog on peace and non-violent action. "God is with us" can be a title for a blog on the person of Jesus Christ. "Ask the Lord of the harvest" can be a title for a blog on encouraging vocations in the Church. And "Treasure hidden in a field" can be a title for a blog on Christian life and holiness. You can edit these phrases and come up with something even original but also based on Scripture.

Suggestions from Scripture (Old Testament)

The Old Testament is also a rich source of inspiration and imagery to discover ideas for a Catholic blog title. The Old Testament books of special mention are: the book of Psalms, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Sirach or Ecclesiasticus, and the Wisdom of Solomon. These books are filled with many wise sayings and can give ideas how you can deepen your writing and make it more substantial for your readers.

The book of Psalms is to be specially mentioned because of its highly lyrical words and its tone of prayer and solemnity. Below are a few suggestions to help you compose an effective Catholic blog title. These are:

  • "Give thanks to the Lord" (Psalm 105:1)
  • "Praise the Lord, my soul" (Psalm 103:1)
  • "God is our shelter and strength" (Psalm 46:1)
  • "The Lord is my Shepherd" (Psalm 23:1)

"God is our shelter and strength" could be a title for a family blog, where members of the family can contribute a post to the development of the Catholic blog. "The Lord is my shepherd" is very popular, and its imagery is strong, especially in the context of crisis, trial, tribulation, or conflict.

Documents of the Church as sources of inspiration

Reading the documents of the Church, we cannot but be inspired by the way some words are harmonically presented to refer to a specific Christian doctrine, teaching, or action. The documents of the Church are published in the Vatican web site (www.vatican.va). You can narrow your search, and focus on the documents of Vatican II, and the writings of John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

Below are some suggestions for titles which can fire up your imagination, and enkindle in your readers the desire for a greater knowledge of the Catholic faith:

  • A contemplative eye upon the world (36th World Communications Day Message)
  • The incarnate love of God (Deus Caritas Est)
  • The seed of eternal life (Sacramentum Caritatis)
  • Feed the man dying from hunger (Gaudium et Spes)
  • An inseparable sacrament of unity (Ut Unum Sint)
  • Media as 'gifts of God' (Aetatis Novae)

These six suggestions can basically form the title (with editing and revisions also according to your preference) to speak respectively of the following: on the Church and the Internet; on the person of Jesus Christ; on the Eucharist, the sacrament to the sick, and ministry to the elderly; on the works of Christian charity; on the ecumenical commitment of the Church; and of the responsible use of the social communications media. You can also edit them to present an original Catholic blog title which can speak to the minds and hearts of the readers on the Web.

The encyclicals of John Paul II

The other encyclicals of John Paul II are also great sources of inspiration and ideas. John Paul II has written fourteen encyclicals. The twelve listed below can give you ideas which to base an effective Catholic blog title idea. These are as follows:

  • Redeemer of Humankind
  • The Mercy of God
  • On Human Work
  • The Apostles of the Slavs
  • Lord and Giver of Life
  • The Mother of the Redeemer
  • On Social Concern
  • The Mission of the Redeemer
  • The Hundredth Year: "New Things" One Hundred Years Later
  • The Splendor of Truth
  • The Gospel of Life
  • On the Relationship Between Faith and Reason

Summary

There is a great amount of inspiration and ideas we can obtain from Scriptures and the documents of the Church. What is special about these sources is that they open us to a rich tradition of theology and spirituality - teachings on the Christian life from really substantial sources and writings. Although you can get one of the suggestions given in this article to entitle your blog, you can also reread your favorite Scripture passages and a document of the Church you are more familiar with. This will assure you of a blog title you want to really work on so that you can post something that speaks from the heart.
