3 Basic Tips for More Efficient Computing

Introduction

This article will seek to remind web developers of three basic computing tips that are sometimes overlooked when working on the computer. The three tips which can make working on the computer more efficient are:

  • creating shortcuts of folders/files to the computer's desktop area
  • bookmarking frequently visited sites and organizing them into folders
  • creating a number of needed browser tabs and saving them for the next computer session
The first tip relates to web development work offline, while the last two relates to work online. Using these three basic tips can save us time, energy, and money.

Desktop shortcuts

We usually have folders and files in our hard disk drive or removable disks (like flash drives or memory cards) that we return to often for editing and updating. Instead of going through the procedures of - opening a disk, searching among its folders, and then zeroing in on the file that we need - we can instead create a shortcut to that file in the desktop area of our computer. The process to complete this in Windows OS is as follows:

  • open the hard disk or removable disk
  • search for the folder that contains the file needed
  • open the folder
  • search for the file that is needed
  • once found, click on the file once
  • then while the cursor is on the file, right-click your mouse
  • move cursor to "send to desktop (create shortcut)"
  • click and see if the shortcut to the file appears on the desktop area of your computer
You can use this procedure not only for files, but also for programs and folders. Once your desktop area is populated with shortcuts, you can then organize them neatly by dragging the shortcut images with the mouse.

Saving and organizing bookmarks

When working online on the computer, we have sites that we need to revisit often. To save on time, instead of typing the URL of the web site in the address bar of the browser, we can bookmark this site (and all our other sites that we work on for our daily computing). Browsers usually have an "add bookmark" or "add to favorites" feature that will save the page of the site for us. Once we have collected quite a number of saved bookmarks, we can then organize them into folders through the "organize bookmarks" feature of our browser. There is a "create folder" feature in which we can use the category names we want for our bookmark folders. In Internet Explorer 8, you need to use the "move to folder" feature to move a saved bookmark into its respective folder category.

As we go on in our web development work, it is common to discover new sites that can help us progress in our work. So we need to bookmark all these new sites and organize them by moving them into the folders we have categorized. If you want to save all these bookmarks into one HTML file, browsers usually have an "export bookmark" feature which can save your organized system of bookmarks as an .htm or .html file (bookmark.htm or bookmark.html). This can come in very handy when you want to use another browser. You can "import" this bookmark file in another browser so that you can work in the same organized system as you did with your original browser.

Once a week, it is good to update your .htm/.html bookmark file. This ensures that any new web sites that have been integrated in our organized bookmark system will also be saved. Updating this file simply requires using the "export" feature again and then replace the saved "bookmark.html" file.

Creating browser tabs and saving them

Another basic tip to use for ease of work in the computer, is to create browser tabs that we need for every computer session. When we finish a computer session, some browsers ask you if you want to save the tabs for that session. Always click "yes", as this can save us time in creating new browser tabs again for the next computer session. In Internet Explorer 8, to create a New Tab, all you need to do is to click on that empty tab space next to the default browser tab. After you have created all the browser tabs you need, IE 8 asks you if you want to close all the tabs. Click "yes" because the tabs are automatically saved for the next computer session. When you open IE 8 again and the default page appears, click on a "New Tab", and then move your cursor to "Reopen Last Browsing Session". Clicking on this link will add again all the browser tabs you have used in your last computer session.

Summary and conclusions

These three basic tips are valuable but in our web development work, we sometimes overlook its usefulness. But employing these tips in our computer work will lessen work procedures, save us more time, and eventually delay the depreciation of our computer system - making it work longer for us and save us money.
