The Principles and Foundation for Writing Catholic
Articles and Catholic Blog Posts on the Net
Introduction
Although Catholics have already been building web sites
and blogging on the Net for a long time already, the basis for
a
brand of writing Catholic articles we have developed, comes
from the
Message of the Holy Father (John Paul II) for the 36th
World Communications Day - with the theme of "Internet: A New
Forum for Proclaiming the Gospel".
Principles from the Message that can act as guidelines
The outline given below are principles taken from the Message, which
can help as guidelines for writing Catholic articles on the Net, and in
small Catholic web site development.
- "The Church in every age continues the work begun on
the day of Pentecost...to preach the Gospel to every nation."
(paragraph 1)
- "For the Church the new world of cyberspace is a summons...
of using its potential to proclaim the Gospel message". (paragraph
2)
- "Like other communications media, it is a means, not an
end in itself". (paragraph 3)
- "Christian living calls for continuing instruction and
catechesis...the area in which the Internet can provide
excellent help". (paragraph 3)
- "...the Internet can never replace that profound experience
of God which only the living, liturgical and sacramental life
of the Church can offer...it can certainly provide a unique
supplement and support". (paragraph 3)
- "...that this marvellous instrument serves the common
good and does not become a source of harm". (paragraph 4)
- "...how are we to cultivate...values...insight...the wisdom
that understands the difference between right and wrong (in
the context of the Internet)?" (paragraph 4)
- "...electronically mediated relationships can never take
the place of the direct human contact required for genuine
evangelization". (paragraph 5)
- "...how can we ensure [the Internet] will work in favour
of the globalization of human development and solidarity,
objectives closely linked to the Church's evangelical mission?"
(paragraph 5)
- "...how can we ensure that [the Internet] can serve
the cause of peace?" (paragraph 5)
- "From this galaxy of sight and sound will the face of
Christ emerge and the voice of Christ be heard?" (paragraph 6)
- "...this is what will make the Internet a genuinely human
space...room for Christ [and] ...room for man". (paragraph 6)
How the principles can be applied
One way of applying these principles is simply creating a blog
that reflects a personal or family's Christian witness, and how
Christ has changed one's life or family for the better.
If one has extra time and resources, he can also build a small web site.
For to really engage in
basic web development, a web site is needed,
a blog also, and sitemaps to submit to a search engine for indexing.
As Catholics, we also have the privilege of being part of the
Church's evangelization and mission to all peoples (by virtue of
our baptismal consecration). The reward we shall reap in this
process lies in the blessing John Paul II gives at the end of his
Message: "May the Lord bless all those who work for this aim".
If you wish to follow the principles and foundation John Paul II
has stated in his message, then you can use the Catholic web developer
methods that we share in this web site. All information is free.
All we ask in return is just a link back to our web site when you
have already setup your small Catholic web and blog site.
How to begin
To begin on this mission, reading the Message
of John Paul II well will be a great guide. Then, we can bring
all what we have learned in the Message to our prayer for discernment
and deeper reflection. It is also best to seek counsel
from a spiritual director, adviser or confessor. And when all
the above present many positive confirmations, we can then start with
a free blog hosting account and a free web hosting account. With
these two, we can already become part of the Catholic movement on
the Net. To obtain greater visibility on the Net, you may then
submit your web site and blog at one of the
Catholic WebRings we
manage through WebRing.com. Here, you can learn about web site
design and HTML coding - together with other Catholic web site
owners and bloggers in the WebRing.
