Fivefold Benefits of Basic Catholic Web Site Development
Introduction
At the end of John Paul II's Message for the 36th World Communications
Day, with the theme of using the Net as a means of proclaiming the Gospel,
he ended by saying "may the Lord bless all those who work for this aim".
It is a word of blessing that is true and and will benefit all those who
faithfully respond to John Paul II's call to "work for this aim".
Harvesting after sowing the seeds of the Gospel on the Net
It has been seven years since we have followed the call of John Paul
II to use the Net as a medium for proclaiming the Gospel and propagating
the Catholic faith. Though the return on all our work is not monetary
profit, the blessings received for those who become active in evangelizing
on the Net, are realized through five concrete benefits and privileges.
Vital and important global links
First, it provides the opportunity to collect and maintain vital
and important global links and connections with major web sites
and leading internet corporations.
Learning technology to cut on costs and save money
Second, it provides the opportunity to update on valuable information
that can help lower the cost of living, and therefore save money through
technology and its many applications.
Ease of communication with a growing social network
Third, it provides the opportunity to strengthen bonds and relationships
online with family, relatives, Catholic classmates and friends
- located in different parts of the world - through a growing
and expanding social network.
Deepening spirituality through journals in blogs
Fourth, it provides the opportunity to make the Web also a means to
deepen Catholic spirituality and strengthen a personal relationship with
Christ through writing reflections on the Word of God in blogs. Also,
it provides the opportunity to strengthen relationship with the Catholic
Church as an institution, by being able to integrate the dissemination of
news, events, and official teachings of the Vatican through a small
Catholic web site and blog network.
Becoming part of the Church's mission ad gentes
Fifth, it provides the opportunity to become a part of the Church's
universal mission to preach the Gospel to all peoples of all cultures,
by undertaking the task of evangelizing the digital continent through
building a basic and small Catholic web site and connecting with
Catholics of all cultures in the "new digital continent" through
social networking.
The more we commit, the greater the long-term benefits
Presently, these fivefold benefits and privileges are obtained by
our Catholic family as we engage in basic and small Catholic web site
development, blogging, and social networking. The more faithful and
persevering we are in following John Paul II to "work for this aim",
the more we reaped rewards and blessings from the Lord. Also, the more
we continue on and keeping faithful to the teachings of the Church as
regards the responsible use of the Net, the more benefits and
privileges accrue to our efforts in this missionary enterprise.
Discerning whether you are called to "work for this aim"
If you are discerning whether to join in this mission and "work
for this aim" (as John Paul II phrased the internet mission he
wrote in the 36th World Communications Day Message), have some
doubts about it, or would want to learn more what is required of
the mission, you may want to join me in the Google Friend Connect
application at the bottom of the
Introduction to Web 2.0 Technology Environment page. God gifts
us with freedom to use this wonderful gift of technology.
May you and your family members also take the initiative in
the universal mission of the Church by evangelizing and proclaiming
the Gospel on the Net through basic and small Catholic web site
development. (Site administrator's note: Due to the limitations
of a small Catholic web site and social network, we can accommodate
only a few members).
